The Tier 2 work permit system is barely used by Britain’s small businesses, according to a new report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

A new study conducted by the organisation has revealed that 95 per cent of small companies based in the UK have never used Tier 2 work permits, a points-based immigration system, and very few were in possession of a Tier 2 Sponsorship Licence.

Published by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), the report suggests that 21 per cent of small business owners currently employ EU workers, but concluded that companies could struggle as a result of the referendum result.

Furthermore, the study showed that 29 per cent of British business owners are concerned about being expected to enforce new immigration rules following Brexit, with this figure surging to 56 per cent for companies with EU citizens on the payroll.

Speaking on behalf of Workpermit.com, Sanwar Ali said: “If Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party wins the forthcoming General Election we will probably see a more liberal immigration policy than would be the case under the Conservative Government.”

Skills policy adviser at the CIPD, Lizzie Crowley, added that the FSB’s research highlighted a need for small companies to pursue multiple options when looking to both retain and recruit employees.

She also urged small firms to provide their staff with opportunities for development and training, while also ensuring that their workforce’s skills are utilised effectively.

“Smaller businesses will have no choice but to reach wider talent pools. Only by identifying gaps can companies deliver practical solutions,” she said.
