UK work permits - Tier 2

The Tier 2 work permit category replaces the previous UK work permit scheme and forms a core component of the UK points-based system for managed migration.

To make a successful Tier 2 UK work permit application you must have received a confirmed offer of employment from a licensed UK employer and you must be in possession of a Certificate of Sponsorship issued by your sponsoring employer. You must also pass the points-based assessment.

There are 4 underlying categories of Tier 2 visas:

As was the case with the previous UK work permit scheme, the Tier 2 visa application process is led by the employer and it is the employer/sponsoring company who is responsible for issuing the Certificate of Sponsorship on behalf of the applicant.

Employers who wish to learn more about Tier 2 visas are advised to read our section on Tier 2 visa information for employers.

Tier 2 work permits and permanent residency

Tier 2 UK work permit holders will have the opportunity of gaining permanent residence in the UK provided they live and work in the UK for the minimum requirement of five years. Once a Tier 2 visa holder has satisfied this five year requirement they may qualify for Indefinite Leave to remain in the UK (ILR), which can be then be followed by British Naturalisation as a UK citizen.

Tier 2 work permits and changes of employment

Tier 2 visa holders are able to change their job while in the UK, however they will be required to obtain a new Certificate of Sponsorship from a sponsorship licensed employer and will also need to undergo a reassessment against the current points test. The position will also have to meet the advertising requirements of the resident labour market test.
