Timezones in Australia
Three distinct timezones exist in Australia - Eastern time, Central time and Western time. Daylight savings time is also observed in some areas.
Australian Eastern Standard Time - AEST
AEST is followed in the following regions: New South Wales (except Broken Hill), Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory.
AEST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 10 hours (GMT +10).
Australian Western Standard Time - AWST
AWST is followed in Western Australia only.
AWST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 8 hours (GMT +8).
Australian Central Standard Time - ACST
ACST is followed in these regions: South Australia, Northern Territory, Broken Hill (NSW).
ACST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 9.5 hours (GMT +9.5).
Daylight savings
Daylight saving time is observed by New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory from early to late October to the end of March. Western Australia began a three year trial of daylight saving on 3 December 2006.
Queensland and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight savings.
